How technological, environmental and managerial performance contribute to the productivity change of Malaysian construction firms

Purpose Total factor productivity (TFP) change is an important driver of long-run economic growth in the construction sector. However, examining TFP alone insufficient to identify cause changes. Therefore, this paper employs infrequently used Geometric Young Index (GYI) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) measure decompose (TFPI) at firm-level from 2009 2018 based on Malaysian firms' data. Design/methodology/approach To improve TFPI estimation, normally unobserved environmental variables were included GYI-TFPI model. These are physical operation firm (inland versus marine operation) regional locality (West Malaysia East Malaysia). Consequently, complete components (i.e. technological, environmental, managerial, statistical noise) can be accurately decomposed. Findings The results reveal that affected by technological stagnation improvements technical efficiency but a decline scale-mix efficiency. Moreover, effect most profound. In case, being operating reduce up 38%. result, therefore, indicates need for progressive policies long-term productivity. Practical implications Monitoring evaluating allows informed decision made managers/policy makers competitiveness. Furthermore, improving public infrastructure, particularly regionality relation index. Originality/value This study contributes knowledge demonstrating how completely modelled using aggregator index with good axiomatic properties SFA. addition, first apply include GYI modelling productivity, which crucial importance formulating appropriate policies.
